‘HOMO DETRITUS’ SERIES – Exhibition : The bins of History

From to 31 March 2024

See all news

This exhibition, created by Inrap (the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research), takes a look at four bins from history: neolithic, Gallo-Roman, medieval and contemporary. Bins are the receptacles of all that people throw away and abandon. They have been present throughout history and, for archaeologists, offer a snapshot of life at the time they were filled. In bins, researchers can find materials and objects that tell us about the eating habits, ways of life and technical know-how of past civilisations. Just like the bins of centuries past, our present-day bins will one day be fonts of information on our living habits for future generations of archaeologists. They will be markers of time vital for understanding the age we live in.
