Guided Tour : An outdoor museum

Inscriptions, sculptures and fragments of ancient architecture found on the territory of Nîmes and its surroundings were displayed throughout the city for centuries. Inserted in a wall or in a town house courtyard, these remains of a glorious and distant past are as much a testimony to the scholarship of their owners as they are to the familiarity of the people of Nîmes with these antiques. Numerous objects and fragments were placed in and around the monuments, thus creating outdoor lapidary deposits. This tour, beginning with the collections of the Musée de la Romanité, extends into the city where you will discover the last witnesses of this practice, predating the first Archaeological Museum established in the former Jesuit College at the end of the 19th century.
