cultural mediation
Tours and school workshops
The guided tours and workshops are great opportunities to help visitors gain a better understanding of the exhibition.
Children, adults and specific target audiences are invited to special events devoted to artworks and archaeological objects, to decipher the hidden messages and learn to understand the complex ideas put forward in the exhibition.
The beliefs of Ancient Rome are very different to the contemporary idea we have of religion. Instead of imposing dogmas, it is about contracts agreed upon between the Gods and the people, to ensure everything runs smoothly. Religion as a set of rituals
The Roman Principate founded by Octavius-Augustus and the new rites involved in celebrating his deification after his death were completely new. Thanks to Octavius-Augustus, this was a turning point for the political and religious context of the Empire.
During the guided tours and workshops, visitors are encouraged to observe and understand how the artworks, archaeological objects and this cult devoted to the Roman emperor are all connected.
Digital mediation
From the offset, the Musée de la Romanité chose to use contemporary mediation tools, combined with the wonderful digital possibilities to contextualise, explain and tell the story of archaeological objects… It is therefore understandable that the exhibition “The Roman Emperor, a mortal among the gods” should make use of the four devices used to add images, games and an immersive experience to the tour.
In just a few key sequences, the film Divus Augustus, tells the extraordinary story of Octavius Augustus, the young nobleman who became an emperor and then a god….
The interactive game The Banquet of the Caesars adapted from a spoof about the emperor Julien, presents visitors with a very funny story based on ancient literature, and at the same time, they can learn about the greatest emperors and the Greco-Roman pantheon.
The immersive showing of ‘The sacrifice’ combines ancient iconography with animated sequences to plunge visitors into the visual recreation of the particularly moving Roman sacrifice ritual.
Finally, we worked in partnership with the CIREVE (Interdisciplinary Center of Virtual Reality) from the University of Caen to create a virtual reality tool to explore Augustus’ forum. Along with the gods Mars and Venus, visitors will discover the political and religious message of the decorative programme, in a funny and slightly quirky way.
