Ceramics from Attica

This red-figure skyphos from Attica (Athens region of Greece) – 5th century B.C. portrays the owl of Athena. On red-figure ceramics from Attica, the decorative parts are red, with a black background. The decorative area is outlined, before a slip (clay slurry, red in colour) is added to the rest of the vase, which will then blacken to reveal the different firing phases (3 in total). The decorative details are then added using precise incisions.

The Musée de la Romanité offers you the chance to create your very own decorative red-figure ceramic object from Attica.
It is a complex procedure but can easily be reproduced at home by following our tutorial!
