Nîmes Roman Days – In the footsteps of a legionary at the caupona (Roman tavern): eat, drink, play!

Animation

See all news

Just like a legionary from Roman times, step inside a traditional tavern and taste some of the dishes concocted based on the recipes from Apicius near the thermopolium (equivalent of fast-food back then) and sample some Roman wines. It is also an opportunity to learn about antique winemaking and play some of the board games that were popular with patrons of the caupona. This traditional tavern was inspired by the findings from archaeological digs at the Julia Felix domus in Pompeii. After the earthquake of 62 A.D., Julia Felix converted part of her lavish villa into a tavern to fund reconstruction work.
