Under the Republic, Roman hairstyles were simple, much like the styles of Greek women. Under the Empire, when the comb was introduced, hairstyles became more complex and were used as a way to demonstrate social status. The wealthy Roman women of the 1st century enjoyed luxury and beauty and would display their wealth with their clothing and also their hairstyles. They were the very first influencers! As soon as they would introduce a new hairstyle, other women immediately followed suit…
