Gallic pottery

The Gauls would make their dishes using coils of clay, and then they would decorate them by cutting into the fresh clay using various tools. All sorts of dishes were made using this ancient technique. If you don’t have any clay, don’t worry, this technique also works very well with modelling clay or salt dough! Here is how to make your own:

Salt dough recipe:

2 cups of flour
1 cup of fine salt
1 cup of warm water
2 tablespoons of oil

Mix all the ingredients together to form a paste.

The technique:

1 – Roll the dough between your hands to form coils of the same width
2 – Make a sort of snail shape with a coil and then smooth over the layers with your fingers to form a disc.
3 – Take another coil and place this around the edges of the disc, forming sides
4 – Smooth over the sides and decorate with geometric shapes

Then, depending on the material used, it can be baked (just like clay) or left to dry naturally!
